Nuovo Mercato Esquilino: spices and world produce near Termini
The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino, at via Principe Amedeo 184, is Rome's great multicultural market, a ten-minute walk from Termini station. Since 15 September 2001 it has occupied the former Sani barracks, on about 8,000 m², replacing the open-air market that had stood around Piazza Vittorio since the end of the 19th century. You will find Italian fruit and vegetables, fish, meat and cheese, but above all spices, exotic vegetables, rice, teas and products from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Entry is free, and an hour is enough.
Highlights

The spice stalls
Chilli, turmeric, curry, cumin and blends sold loose by weight: this is the section that made the market's name, and the best place to bring home a cheap kitchen souvenir.

The old barracks buildings
The market is set in the buildings of the former Sani barracks, with four entrances: via Principe Amedeo, via Mamiani, via Turati and via La Marmora. Walk around before going in to pick the one that suits you.
World produce
Cassava, plantains, mangoes, Asian vegetables, breads and pastas of every origin: the market reflects the multicultural population of the Esquilino district and works as much as a supermarket for residents as an attraction for the curious.
Roman produce
Cheeses, cured meats, fish and seasonal vegetables are not lacking either, for putting together a picnic or buying something to cook if your accommodation has a kitchen.

Tips
Bring small change: many small stalls prefer cash. Prices are shown per kilo or per piece; ask before weighing and check the weight. The market serves residents first: don't expect tourist dining, but stalls of produce to take away. For a sit-down meal in a more polished setting, the Mercato Centrale at Termini station is a food hall. Our guide to street food in Rome and the one on Rome's markets give other addresses. Keep your bag closed in the aisles.
