Museum of Illusions Rome: tickets, opening hours and reviews (2026)

Updated on October 27, 2026

The Museum of Illusions in Rome (Museo delle Illusioni) is at Via Merulana 17, a short walk from Santa Maria Maggiore: about an hour of interactive rooms (holograms, a tilted room, mirrors, a vortex tunnel) that you photograph more than you read. Tickets start at 21 € online (Tiqets, October 2026) for a visit of about 1 hour, free cancellation until 23:59 the day before; over 7,500 reviews rate it 4.4/5. On weekends and public holidays, entry is reportedly reserved for visitors who have already booked online, so book your slot ahead.

The museum is next to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore on Via Merulana. See the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore before or after, and the area in Esquilino and Termini.

The rooms

Holograms, an Ames room (people seem to shrink or grow), a tilted room, a vortex tunnel, infinity mirrors and logic puzzles: everything is made for photos, and the panels explain the optical or perception trick behind each installation. It works well for children and teenagers.

Hours and prices

Monday to Thursday 10:00-20:30 (last entry 19:30), Friday to Sunday 10:00-21:00 (last entry 20:00), according to Italian sources checked on 26 October 2026: confirm on the official site. The walk-up price is reported at around 18 € (ages 6-15 12 €, free up to 5, family ticket 45 €); the ticket sold online through Tiqets costs more, from 21 €. Sources differ: the exact price is the one shown when you book. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Tips

  • Book an online slot on a weekday to skip the queue, and for a weekend it is compulsory. One hour is enough; if your date is not offered, try another slot. It is a good rainy-day idea: see Rome on a rainy day and Rome with children. Do not expect a classic museum: it is entertainment, with photos to take as a group.

How to get there

Via Merulana 17, 00185 Rome. About 10 minutes on foot from Termini station (metro A and B); metro A Vittorio Emanuele is also about 10 minutes away, and Santa Maria Maggiore is on the same street.
