Prati or Borgo
- Borgo: the lanes between Castel Sant'Angelo and St Peter's Square. Very close to the basilica and quiet in the evening, but few hotels and little restaurant choice away from the tourist streets. See where to eat near the Vatican.
- Prati: a flat, middle-class area with wide streets, good restaurants and the shops of Via Cola di Rienzo. More hotels and a wider price range. Metro line A stations Ottaviano, Cipro and Lepanto serve the area. See the guide to Prati and Borgo.
Which hotel for your budget
The names below are addresses mentioned by specialist guides in October 2026: check current prices and recent reviews on Booking.
- Upscale: Hotel dei Mellini, on Via Muzio Clementi in Prati, an elegant hotel about 12 minutes on foot from the Vatican Museums.
- Mid-range: the Atlante Star (four stars, about 70 rooms) and its twin, the Atlante Garden, 10 to 12 minutes on foot from the Vatican Museums and the basilica.
- Budget: small hotels in Borgo, including Hotel Sant'Anna. Guides quote ranges of around 100 to 150 euros a night out of season; rates vary a lot by date.
What changes for your visit
- Vatican Museums: staying in Prati lets you arrive at opening, before the groups. See tickets and early access and the Vatican Museums.
- Wednesday morning: the papal audience fills St Peter's Square and the streets around it; allow extra time to get around. See St Peter's Square.
- Coming back at night: Prati is quiet and fairly safe; Borgo's streets are empty late. See safety at night in Rome.
- Dress code: for churches and the Vatican, see the dress code.
- The tourist tax is added to the room price.
In short
Pick Borgo for closeness to St Peter's and quiet, Prati for the choice of hotels and restaurants. If you are still undecided, compare with where to stay in Rome and the best hotels in Rome by budget.
