What the official ticket includes
The climb starts inside the basilica. After the lift or the first part of the stairs, you step out onto the inner gallery at the base of the dome, which overlooks the nave. The end of the route runs between the two shells, up a narrow, sloping staircase where you walk bent over: it is the hardest part. The dome was open from 7am to 6pm until 25 October 2026, then moves to winter hours (7:30am to 5pm according to the basilica's website, check the exact dates). Online tickets cannot be changed or refunded. Older third-party listings show lower prices (€8 or €10): trust the official site. See our St Peter's Dome page.
Guided tour or ticket alone?
The GetYourGuide guided tour covers the basilica and the dome with a guide. I could not reopen its listing on 30 October: note the price, duration, group size and exactly what the climb includes before paying. It is worth it if you want to understand Michelangelo, the baldachin and the tombs, and avoid hunting for tickets. The ticket alone is enough for a self-guided visit, but in high season the queue is long and places on site depend on availability.
Before you climb
Note that the upper staircase is narrow and sloping. Skip the climb if you are claustrophobic, prone to vertigo or have a heart condition. Large bags and suitcases are refused and there is no cloakroom. The basilica dress code applies (shoulders and knees covered, see dress code in churches and at the Vatican). Avoid Wednesday mornings, the day of the Pope's audience.
Planning the day
Climb at opening, when the staircase is calm. To choose between the basilica and the museums, read Vatican Museums or St Peter's Basilica?; the St Peter's Basilica page gives access details.
Frequently asked questions
How many steps? 551 by the stairs; 320 on foot after the lift.
