What to know before choosing
Castel Sant'Angelo is a national museum: open Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 7:30pm (last entry 6:30pm), closed on Mondays, 1 January and 25 December. The full price is €18, €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25, and free under 18. The ticket is named: you need an original ID at the entrance, and each visitor's name is requested when booking, including with resellers. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free but cannot be booked online, with a single queue at the ticket desk. On the first Monday of the month, a 2pm to 8pm opening at €5 is sold on site only.
The official museum ticket
It costs €18, covers the self-guided visit of the ramps, the papal apartments and the terrace, and is booked online through the museum's official ticket office (CoopCulture, named on the Ministry of Culture page). It is the cheapest option in this comparison. Check that the booking site's address is the Ministry's or CoopCulture's: unofficial resellers show inflated prices. No audio guide is included in the basic ticket.
Timed ticket with digital audio guide (Crown Tours)
This is the most booked listing for the castle: 4.6 out of 5 from over 7,500 reviews, from $19 (the displayed price is a base; the option you pick can change it). The ticket is timed: arrive 15 minutes early. Travellers praise the view from the terrace and the quick entry, and like visiting at their own pace. The recurring complaint concerns the audio guide: it can be hard to set up and does not always follow the room numbering. Download it before you arrive. Free cancellation up to 24 hours before is advertised. It is worth it if you want commentary and hassle-free booking, not if you only want the lowest price. See the offer.
Guided Passetto di Borgo tour with castle ticket

The Passetto is the 13th-century fortified corridor linking the Vatican to the castle, used by Pope Clement VII during the Sack of Rome in 1527. This listing, "Passetto di Borgo Tour & Castel Sant'Angelo Ticket", adds the Passetto and a guide to the entry ticket: 4.4 out of 5 from about 123 reviews, from $39, with a face value of €28 for adults according to the listing. Reviews praise the guides; wheelchair access is limited. The listing was non-refundable when we checked: read the terms before paying. Our castle page announced the museum's own Passetto visit until 18 October 2026; check that it is renewed for your dates. See the offer.
Pitfalls to watch for
- Contradictory face prices. Some reseller listings show €16 or €22 for entry: the official price we found is €18; do not trust an undated figure.
- The name on the ticket. It must match the ID you show: a mismatch can block entry.
- Inflated prices. All timed tickets are valid for one slot: do not pay a premium for a "skip-the-line" that changes nothing about the time. See scams to avoid in Rome.
- Private tours. They exist at several hundred euros for the group, with few reviews: book them only if you want a guide for yourselves.
- The stairs. The terrace is reached by ramps and steps; the visit is not easy with a pushchair.
