The comparison at a glance

"Early entry": what it really means

The Vatican Museums open to the public at a fixed time, and every visitor goes through security. Most "early entry" offers simply book the first slot of the morning, when the rooms are still quiet: you gain calm, but you are not alone. Reviews published on the listings even report that the "early" group sometimes waited in the same line as everyone else, or that the actual entry into the museums came later than the meeting time, which is the meeting point and not the door. Only the exclusive-hours tour states an entry before opening or after closing. For tickets without a guide and official hours, see the page on the Vatican Museums.

Early Entry to Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's (What a Life Tours)

This is the most booked offer in the comparison: 4.9 out of 5 from about 3,560 reviews, groups capped at 12 and a length of 3 to 3.5 hours. It includes direct access from the Sistine Chapel to St. Peter's Basilica, which saves leaving and queueing again. Some travelers find the pace fast. The price seen is around $120. See the offer.

Early-Entry Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel Tour (The Ultimate Italy)

The cheapest of the five, at about $115: 4.4 out of 5 from about 737 reviews, a small group, 2.5 hours in the museums, then the basilica at your own pace. The listing does not describe a separate entry before the public: it is mostly an early slot with a guide. See the offer.

Vatican, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter Early Morning Tour (LivTours)

The group is capped at 6, the rating is 4.9 out of 5 from about 304 reviews, and the price starts at $223. The operator says you reach the Sistine Chapel before the big groups. It is the choice when group size matters more than price. It is not suitable for wheelchairs. See the offer.

Early Morning Vatican Tour with Sistine Chapel (Through Eternity Tours)

A 3.5-hour tour with about 30 minutes in the Raphael Rooms and 20 minutes in the Sistine Chapel, ending at St. Peter's Basilica. Rated 4.6 out of 5 from about 152 reviews, from $170, free cancellation up to 24 hours before. If you book less than 72 hours ahead, the tour ends inside the museums, because skip-the-line access to the basilica cannot be guaranteed. See the offer.

Intimate Sistine Chapel Tour at Exclusive Hours (Walks of Italy)

The only offer that enters outside public opening hours: before opening or after closing, with an accredited guide who may speak inside the Sistine Chapel, which is normally forbidden. Allow about 2 hours, including 1.5 hours in the museums and 30 minutes in the Sistine Chapel. Prices seen run from $418 to $538, and the displayed rating (around 4.7 to 5) rests on only about 14 reviews, so there is little track record. It is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or strollers. See the offer.

The two official GetYourGuide bestsellers

GetYourGuide's official ranking for Italy puts two Vatican offers at the top that are not "early entry" products: they are added here so the comparison stays complete.

The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel entrance ticket is number 1 in the Italian ranking: from €32.50 (October 2026), 4.5 out of 5 from 158,583 reviews. Judging by its title it is an entrance ticket without a guided tour; the time slot, what is included and the change conditions should be checked on the listing. See the offer.

The Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica tour is number 5: from €115 (October 2026), 4.3 out of 5 from 85,819 reviews. The title promises the museums, the Sistine Chapel and the basilica in one visit; group size, length and meeting point should be checked on the listing. See the offer.

What is not included and the pitfalls

  • Opening days. The museums are closed on Sunday, except the last Sunday of the month (free entry, very crowded): no offer is useful that day.
  • Punctuality. The entry slot is strict. Several listings state that latecomers cannot be accepted and a missed tour is not refunded.
  • The basilica. St. Peter's is a working church: a closure for a ceremony is possible, with no refund according to some listings. The direct access from the Sistine Chapel is reserved for guided tours.
  • Dress and bags. Shoulders and knees covered for the Sistine Chapel and the basilica; large bags, tripods and big umbrellas are refused: read our guide to dress in churches and at the Vatican.
  • Accessibility. The pace is brisk; several offers are not suitable for wheelchairs.
  • Photos. They are forbidden in the Sistine Chapel, whichever offer you pick.
  • Unstable prices. Listings show "from" prices that change with the date and the language.

Which offer to choose?

  • First visit, a single day: the What a Life Tours Early Entry, for value, reviews and access to St. Peter's.
  • Tight budget: The Ultimate Italy offer, accepting that you do the basilica alone.
  • A very small group: LivTours, 6 people at most.
  • Full route with the Raphael Rooms and an end at the basilica: Through Eternity Tours.
  • Special occasion or craving silence: the exclusive-hours tour, the only one that really leaves the public flow.
  • The ranking's bestsellers: the entrance ticket from €32.50 if you visit alone, or the tour from €115 if you want a guide through to the basilica, both among the most booked.
  • Self-guided visit: the museum ticket is enough if you prefer your own pace; see Vatican Museums or St. Peter's Basilica.

Booking at the best time

Book several weeks ahead in high season: morning slots go first, and several listings are flagged "likely to sell out". Avoid booking less than 72 hours ahead if you want to end at the basilica with the Through Eternity tour. Several listings allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before, which leaves some margin. To decide on the other tickets for your stay, read which tickets to book in Rome and beware of the fake skip-the-line sellers described in scams to avoid in Rome.
