Expect to pay roughly €25 to €120 a night for a hostel or budget hotel, €150 to €350 for a mid-range 3-4 star hotel, and from about €700 for a luxury palace hotel (indicative prices that vary by season: check the exact price for your dates on Booking). For a first visit, stay in the historic centre (Navona, Campo de' Fiori) or in Monti; Prati and Termini offer better value, with the metro close at hand. Prices are per night for a double room, excluding the tourist tax (hostels: per dorm bed), and they vary widely with dates.

How this selection was made
The 15 hotels below are real, existing properties chosen for their location (the centre on foot or the metro nearby), their category and their price positioning. This is not an objective ranking or a review tested by Rome Authority: we checked the existence, address and neighbourhood of each property on public sources, but not today's rates. The prices shown are rough orders of magnitude for a double room, and they change with dates, availability and events (major holidays, concerts, long weekends). Always check the current rate on the hotel's own site or a booking platform before deciding. If you would rather choose the neighbourhood first, read Where to stay in Rome.
Budget hotels and hostels (€25 to €120 a night)

Around Termini station the choice is widest, and trains, the metro and airport buses are all within walking distance. Read our guide to Esquilino and Termini before booking, because the streets next to the station are unpleasant in the evening.
| Hotel | Neighbourhood | Metro | Indicative price/night | Strengths | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Beehive | Termini, Via Marghera 8 | Termini (A and B), about 5 minutes on foot | double room from about €100 | Small hotel-hostel with a friendly atmosphere, 300 m from the station, café on site | Simple rooms, some with a shared bathroom; demand is high |
| Hotel Des Artistes | Castro Pretorio, Via Villafranca 20 | Castro Pretorio (B), 5 minutes on foot | from about €90 | Family-run hotel near the station and Porta Pia, terrace | Office district that is quiet in the evening; compact rooms |
Hostels: dorm bed or private room
For a solo traveller, a dorm bed is still the cheapest option in Rome. In this table, prices are given per dorm bed and per private room, not per double room as elsewhere in this article.
| Hostel | Neighbourhood | Metro | Indicative price/night | Strengths | Drawbacks |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| YellowSquare Rome | Castro Pretorio, Via Palestro | Castro Pretorio (B), Termini 10 minutes on foot | bed from €25, private room from €90 | Dorms and private rooms, bar, young crowd, near Termini | Party atmosphere, so noisy; private rooms cost as much as a budget hotel |
| Generator Rome | Termini, Via Principe Amedeo 257 | Vittorio Emanuele (A) or Termini (A and B) | bed from €30, private room from €110 | 19th-century building, 24-hour reception, café, bar, terrace | Near the station; prices climb quickly at weekends |
Indicative prices, excluding tourist tax (€3.50 per person per night in a hostel, €6 in a 3-star hotel), to be checked.
Tips for paying less
- Choose your dates: January, February and November, outside the holidays, are generally the cheapest months; Easter, May, June, September and October are expensive. See the best time to visit Rome.
- Pick the metro over the centre: Termini, Castro Pretorio and Prati cost less than Navona and Trastevere, and a transport pass (see getting around Rome) costs less than the price gap.
- Budget for the tourist tax: €3.50 in a hostel, €6 in a 3-star, €7.50 in a 4-star and €10 in a 5-star, per person per night, paid on site. Details in Where to stay in Rome.
- Read what is included: breakfast, towels and lockers are sometimes charged extra in hostels.
- Avoid listings without a CIN code: since 1 January 2025, every tourist rental must display its national identification code.

The best hotels in Rome: quick picks by traveller type
Here are the choices drawn from the tables above (our selection, not a tested ranking):
- First visit, best area: the historic centre between Navona and Campo de' Fiori, on foot to almost everything. The Hotel Navona is a well-placed mid-range address there; see also Where to stay in Rome for a first visit.
- Couples, village feel: the Nerva Boutique Hotel in Monti, facing the Imperial Forums. See Monti.
- Families: the Hotel Farnese in Prati, quiet and ten minutes from the Vatican. See Prati and Borgo and where to stay in Rome with family.
- Tight budget: YellowSquare Rome (bed from €25) or Hotel Des Artistes (from €90), near Termini.
- Going out at night: the Hotel Santa Maria in Trastevere, in a former cloister. See Trastevere.
- For a treat: the Hotel de Russie (from about €1,000), with its terraced garden a step from Piazza del Popolo.
Common mistakes: choosing the cheapest room more than ten minutes from any metro; forgetting the heat, since from June to September air conditioning is essential (check the listing); underestimating the noise in Trastevere and around Navona; and booking a station hotel without reading the reviews about the street. From the airports, see Rome airports: the Leonardo Express links Fiumicino to Termini.
How to choose for your profile
