How much it costs

Rate tables published by the specialist press for 2026 give, per person per night: 4 € for 1 star, 5 € for 2 stars, 6 € for 3 stars, 7.50 € for 4 stars and 10 € for 5 stars. Guesthouses, holiday apartments and hostels fall under other, generally lower, rates. Sources do not all agree on exact amounts: ask your accommodation for the figure when you book, as it collects the tax.

Who pays and for how long

  • Cap: the tax applies to the first 10 nights of a single stay, according to the sources consulted.
  • Exemptions: children up to 10 years old and Rome residents are reported as exempt.
  • Payment: on arrival or departure, in cash or by card depending on the property, often in addition to the booking platform's invoice. Keep the receipt.

Worked example

Two adults, 5 nights in a 4-star: 2 × 5 × 7.50 € = 75 €. A family of two adults and an 8-year-old pays only for the two adults.

Cutting the bill

The tax cannot be negotiated; only choosing a lower accommodation category reduces it. To compare districts and budgets before booking, see where to stay in Rome and the best hotels in Rome by budget. For the rest of the trip budget, read the budget for a trip to Rome.
