Where to go
- Trattorias: Roman cooking (carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana) is eaten on Via Panisperna and in the neighbouring lanes. Trattoria Monti, on Via di San Vito, serves cooking from the Marche, to be booked.
- Ai Tre Scalini, Via Panisperna: wine bar with boards and simple dishes, very busy in the evening, no reservations.
- Pizza: for a round pizza, Alle Carrette, near Trajan's Forum; for pizza al taglio, see pizza al taglio and supplì.
- Aperitivo: the wine bars of Via del Boschetto and Largo Ricci are where locals meet. See aperitivo in Rome.
Tips
- Book in the evening, especially Thursday to Saturday.
- Avoid restaurants with touts or tourist menus in several languages near the Colosseum.
- Hours: lunch is served from 12:30 to 15:00, dinner from 19:30 to 23:00; many places close in between.
- Budget: Monti's trattorias cost more than Testaccio's but less than those near the Colosseum.
