Source for the 2025-2026 dates: Roma Capitale. A call for tenders covers the Piazza Navona market for the 2025 to 2028 editions, with an opening from early December until Epiphany; no official date for 2026-2027 had been found by 25 October 2026. Piazza Navona: the Befana market

This is the market most travellers aim for. You will find stalls with toys, nativity decorations, sweets and sugar "coal" (carbone dolce) for Epiphany, around Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers, and a carousel. It is nothing like the markets of northern Europe: little mulled wine and few dishes, lots of souvenirs and toys. On 6 January, the Befana "comes down" onto the square.

Tips: come on a weekday in the late afternoon, when the light falls and the weekend crowd is absent; keep your belongings in front of you, as the square attracts pickpockets (see scams to avoid in Rome). For food, the terraces on the square are expensive: prefer the neighbouring streets.

The Vatican: tree and nativity scene

Every year, a tree and a nativity scene donated by a region are set up in St. Peter's Square near the obelisk. The inauguration takes place in mid-December and access to the square is free. Mass dates, free tickets and closures are detailed in Christmas in Rome 2026: Vatican masses and closures and in the Christmas in Rome page, which we do not copy here. For museums over the holidays, see the Vatican Museums and the early-access comparison.

The lights: where and how to see them

The streets of the centre are decorated in December. No official 2026 lights programme has been published so far: we therefore do not name a specific street. A classic walking route links the Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna, the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Ponte Sant'Angelo and St. Peter's Square. Night falls around 5 pm in December: set off at 5:30 pm to see the evening and the start of the night.

Seeing Rome lit up on a guided tour

If you have a single evening, two options exist on GetYourGuide (GetYourGuide offers and prices, October 2026):

  • Walking tour of the Christmas lights (about 1.5 hours in a small group), which passes through Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Navona and St. Peter's Square, among others: Rome: Christmas Lights Walking Tour of Iconic Landmarks. Ideal if you like walking and enjoy explanations.
  • Night bus: for example the open-top bus night tour (about 1.5 hours, rated 4.1 out of 5 from more than 2,100 reviews, from €23 as of October 2026). Only part of the bus is open-air: arrive early for the upper deck. The bus suits children and tired legs.

All the Christmas activities are grouped here: Rome: Christmas Lights Night Tour with Live Guide. For a more cultural day, see the Vatican early-access comparison.

Practical tips

  • When to come: the first half of December is the quietest; between Christmas and New Year, everything is full. See best time to visit Rome.
  • Other markets: for everyday markets (Campo de' Fiori, Testaccio), see the markets of Rome. We do not list other Christmas markets or villages for lack of official confirmation.
  • Closures: on 25 December and 1 January, the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums are closed, see the holiday programme.
