The comparison at a glance

What a night tour is worth

Rome's monuments are lit late and the busiest squares, Trevi first, empty out after 9 pm: it is the best time for photos and for cool air in summer. Museums and ticketed sites are closed, though, and these tours are outdoor walks: do not expect to go inside the Pantheon or the Colosseum. For the sights themselves, see our pages on the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the Colosseum.

Moonlight Walking Tour, small group

The most booked and best rated on the list: 4.9 out of 5 from 1,295 reviews. A recent traveler praises the guide's detailed history, and the listing presents Trevi at its quietest. It is the default choice if you want a single night tour. See the offer.

Sunset Tour: Navona, Pantheon, Trevi and Spanish Steps

4.9 out of 5 from 758 reviews; guides are rated 4.9 and value for money 4.8 on the listing. It starts at sunset, so you see the places in daylight and then lit up. One traveler wishes Pantheon entry and small optional fees were explained more clearly: read the listing before booking and see our page on the Pantheon: ticket and guided tour. See the offer.

Small-group guided night walking tour, with the Colosseum

4.8 out of 5 from 1,048 reviews, and 95% of English-speaking travelers give it the top score. It is the one to pick to see the lit-up Colosseum as well as the center. It covers areas farther from Trevi, so plan your way back. See the offer.

Evening city center tour

More mixed: 4.5 out of 5 from 954 reviews. It is fine for a budget evening, but the three offers above are better rated. See the offer.

What about the Colosseum night tour with the underground?

It is a different experience: it goes inside the monument, with underground access. We leave it out of the comparison because we could not confirm a rating of 4.4 or higher on the listing: a third-party source shows 4.1 out of 5 from about 400 reviews, at around $115. Check the rating and what is included (arena, underground) on the listing before booking. For daytime tickets, see Colosseum tickets.

Pitfalls and tips

  • The meeting point. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early: do not count on the group waiting for latecomers.
  • What to wear. Comfortable shoes (cobblestones) and an extra layer, even in summer.
  • Paid entries. A walk does not necessarily include Pantheon entry; the listing says so.
  • Safety. Central Rome is safe in the evening, but watch bags and phones: safety at night.
  • Fake guides. Book through a known platform rather than from a tout on a square.

Which tour to choose?

  • First evening, one tour only: the Moonlight Walking Tour.
  • Starting at sunset: the Sunset Tour.
  • Seeing the Colosseum lit up: the small-group night walking tour.
  • Tight budget: the evening city center tour, accepting a lower rating.
  • No guide: follow the route in Rome at night.
