MAXXI Rome: opening hours, tickets and Zaha Hadid's museum

Updated on October 1, 2026

MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts, stands at Via Guido Reni 4A in the Flaminio district, in a building designed by the architect Zaha Hadid and opened in 2010. It brings two museums together under one roof: MAXXI Arte, devoted to contemporary art, and MAXXI Architettura, devoted to architecture and photography. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm; a ticket costs €15 at the desk and €14 online, and entry is free for under-18s. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours, and more if several temporary exhibitions are on.

Highlights

The hall and its staircases

The hall and its staircases

From the entrance, the hall rises through the full height of the building. Suspended black staircases and walkways link the galleries and give visitors a sequence of viewpoints over the volumes. It is the most photographed space in the museum.

The galleries and the large window

The galleries and the large window

The galleries take the form of long curved volumes that cross and overlap, lit by a glazed roof. The highest gallery ends in a large cantilevered window looking out over the rooftops of the Flaminio district.

An architecture of concrete and light

Bare concrete walls, ramps and curved partitions: Zaha Hadid designed the route as a continuous flow rather than a sequence of rooms. The building won the Royal Institute of British Architects' Stirling Prize in 2010.

The former Montello barracks

The museum is built on the site of the former Montello barracks, part of which was kept and incorporated into the project. Hadid won the international competition in 1998.

MAXXI Architettura

This part of the museum holds the archives of 20th-century Italian architects, including Pier Luigi Nervi, Carlo Scarpa and Aldo Rossi, shown in rotation in exhibitions. The art, architecture and photography exhibitions change several times a year.

Opening hours and tickets

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm, closed on Mondays; the ticket office closes one hour earlier, at 6pm. Full price: €15 at the desk, €14 online; reduced (notably for 18-25-year-olds): €12 at the desk, €11 online. Free for under-18s, disabled visitors and one companion, and on your birthday with ID. The €18 "Open" ticket is valid for one year.
