Valentine's Day in Rome: what to know
In Italy the day is called San Valentino. It is not a public holiday: museums and sites keep their usual hours. On 14 February 2027, a Sunday, note that the first Sunday of the month (7 February) is the free-entry day for state sites; see our free things to do in Rome. February is a quiet season, with often clear but cool days: see the best time to visit Rome.
Walks for two
Central Rome is best discovered on foot, and the finest walks for two cost nothing. Walk from the Trevi Fountain to the Pantheon, then on to Piazza Navona and the Tiber. At dusk, Castel Sant'Angelo and the lit-up Ponte Sant'Angelo give one of the city's best views.
For a panorama, climb the Janiculum: the terrace overlooks Rome's rooftops at sunset. To the south, the Orange Garden on the Aventine is another quiet viewpoint, and the keyhole of the Priory of the Knights of Malta next door frames the dome of St Peter's. For a walk in nature, the Villa Borghese offers its paths and its lake.
Dinner and evening: book ahead
14 February is one of the nights when you must book, sometimes several weeks ahead, especially for a Sunday and at well-known places. Many restaurants offer a special fixed-price menu: ask for the price and contents before confirming, and check the cancellation or deposit terms. To choose a cuisine, see what to eat in Rome and our Roman-cuisine trattorias.
If you have no table, an aperitivo followed by a stroll works well: see our guide to aperitivo in Rome and to Rome at night.
Hotel and weekend for two
Central hotels are in higher demand around 14 February, especially if it falls on a weekend: book with free cancellation if possible. To pick an area, see where to stay in Rome and the trip budget. Prices vary with the date: we give none, check the hotels' own sites.
Traps to avoid
- Rose sellers who approach couples on terraces: decline politely if you do not want one, and ask the price before accepting a flower.
- Love padlocks hung on bridges or monuments: the city has them removed and they damage the monuments, so do not attach any.
- Tourist traps around the monuments: see scams to avoid in Rome.
- Rain: keep an indoor plan B, see Rome on a rainy day.
