The places

  • Pincio terrace: view over Piazza del Popolo and Rome's rooftops at sunset, free access. See the page on the Pincio terrace.
  • Orange Garden (Aventine): a more intimate terrace overlooking the Tiber and St Peter's dome. See the Orange Garden.
  • Janiculum: a wide panorama over the city; very popular at sunset. See the Janiculum.
  • Villa Borghese: a rowing-boat ride on the little lake, a calm park on weekdays. See the Villa Borghese.
  • Trevi Fountain at dawn: the square is almost empty around 6:00; the place is iconic but very busy the rest of the day. See the Trevi Fountain.

Organising the proposal

  • Photographer: booking a photographer who slips among passers-by is the most discreet way to keep the memory. A professional photo session lasts about an hour.
  • Timing: choose a weekday rather than the weekend, and early morning or end of day.
  • Setting: a staged setup (flowers, candles) may require permission in some public places; a simple proposal with a bouquet and a photographer causes no problem. Drones are restricted in central Rome.
  • Plan B: have a covered place ready if the weather changes (restaurant with terrace, café).

To finish the evening

A terrace dinner or a charming hotel extends the moment: see Rome for couples and Rome at night.
