Romantic Rome at a glance: when and how
The romantic time in Rome is late afternoon and early evening: the stone turns golden, the crowds at the major sights leave, and the monuments are lit. The good season (April to June, September-October) is the most pleasant for walking; in high summer, it is better to go out late. Almost all of this guide is done on foot. Bring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, and some unplanned time.
A sunset on the Aventine

The terrace of the Orange Garden is the best place in Rome to watch the sun go down over the Tiber and the dome of St Peter's. Entry is free; the garden closes at 6:00pm from October to February, and later in spring and summer (until 9:00pm from April to August): arrive an hour before closing. A few steps away, the keyhole on Piazza dei Cavalieri di Malta frames the same dome through a gate: it is best seen early in the morning or in the afternoon, before the evening crowds.
In spring, add the Rome Rose Garden, just below: more than 1,100 varieties of roses, free, open from 11 April to 14 June in 2026, every day from 8:30am to 7:30pm. Our guide to the Aventine lays out the full circuit of the hill.
The Janiculum and the Tempietto
The Janiculum hill, above Trastevere, offers a panorama over all the rooftops of Rome. You stroll under the pines among busts of Risorgimento heroes, and hear the noon cannon shot. Halfway up, the church of San Pietro in Montorio houses in its courtyard Bramante's Tempietto, a small Renaissance masterpiece whose perfect proportions are better looked at than described.
The nicest plan is to combine the two in late afternoon, then walk back down to Trastevere for dinner: see our guide to Trastevere.
The Trevi Fountain, preferably late
The Trevi Fountain is the romantic monument par excellence: you toss a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, back to the basin, to be sure of returning to Rome. By day the square is packed; come early in the morning or late in the evening, when the fountain is lit and the atmosphere calms down. A rule governing access to the basin has existed since 2026: check the current rules on its page before you come.
To round off the evening, the Spanish Steps are ten minutes' walk away.
Villa Borghese: a boat and the Pincio terrace

Villa Borghese is the largest park in central Rome, and the most pleasant for a stroll for two: shaded paths, a small lake, a columned temple, lawns for picnics. Rowing boats can be hired on the lake, and the Pincio terrace, at the edge of the park, overlooks Piazza del Popolo at sunset. If you also want to see the Borghese Gallery, booking is compulsory: check the page of the Borghese Gallery well in advance.
Tiber Island, a short trip on the river
Tiber Island, in the middle of the Tiber, is linked to both banks by ancient bridges, including the Ponte Fabricio (62 BC), the oldest bridge in Rome still in use. The island is small and takes twenty minutes to walk round; in the evening the embankments are lit and the view of the Tiber is peaceful. It is a quiet stop between Trastevere and the Jewish quarter.
Ideas for a day and an evening
- A quiet morning: Borghese Gallery (by reservation), then a picnic and a boat on the lake at Villa Borghese.
- Afternoon: Trevi, the Spanish Steps, then the Pincio at sunset.
- An evening in Trastevere: Janiculum and Tempietto around 5:00pm, then dinner in the neighbourhood and a return via Tiber Island.
- A spring outing: rose garden and Orange Garden on the Aventine, then lunch in Testaccio: see our guide to Testaccio.
