The western hills: Janiculum and Trastevere
The Janiculum is the best-known viewpoint: from Piazzale Garibaldi the city spreads at your feet, from the Vittoriano to the Pantheon. At noon a blank cannon shot is fired here every day. The terrace is free and open 24 hours a day.
A few minutes' walk away, the terrace in front of the church of San Pietro in Montorio gives a more intimate view over the rooftops of Trastevere, and is home to Bramante's Tempietto, a jewel of the Renaissance. Combine the two in the same morning, then walk back down to Trastevere.
The Aventine: the Orange Garden and the keyhole
On the opposite bank, the Orange Garden overlooks the Tiber, Trastevere and the dome of St Peter's. It is free, quiet, and fills up at sunset. 300 metres away, the keyhole of the Order of Malta's gate frames St Peter's dome at the end of a green avenue: come early to avoid the queue.
The Pincio and the Villa Borghese
The Pincio terrace, at the south-west of the Villa Borghese, overlooks Piazza del Popolo and the centre of Rome. It is the most popular sunset viewpoint, but there is room for everyone. Access is free. You reach it from Piazza del Popolo by the Pincio ramp, or from Piazza di Spagna by the Spanish Steps: see our page on Piazza di Spagna.
The centre: Vittoriano and Capitoline Hill
The Vittoriano offers the only 360° view of the centre: a panoramic lift goes up to the terrace, about 70 metres high. Access to the Altar of the Fatherland is free, but the terrace is included in the single €18 ticket. Last ride up at 19:00.
On the free side, Capitoline Square lets you walk down beside the Palazzo Senatorio for a direct view of the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. It is open at any hour and stays quiet in the evening.
The Vatican: the dome and Castel Sant'Angelo
For the view over Rome from the Vatican, climb the dome of St Peter's Basilica: a lift serves the terrace level, then 320 narrow steps lead to the outer ring. Entry to the basilica is free, the dome climb is paid. Dress with shoulders and knees covered.
Castel Sant'Angelo also has a terrace on top of Hadrian's mausoleum, with the Tiber, the Vatican and the centre at your feet. The visit costs €18; it is free for everyone on the first Sunday of the month.
When to go
- Noon: the Janiculum for the cannon shot.
- Late afternoon: Orange Garden, Pincio, Vittoriano. The golden light picks out the domes.
- Evening: all the free viewpoints stay open; bring a sweater, especially from November to March.
- Morning: St Peter's dome, before the crowds.
For a full day, our guide Rome in 3 days includes several of these viewpoints, and the page on free things to do in Rome details others.
