The comparison at a glance

When a private tour is worth it

  • Group of 4 or more: the group price is shared, and the guide speaks only to you.
  • Children or reduced mobility: pace, breaks and route adapt.
  • Repeat visitor: you choose the topics (gladiators, Christians, architecture).
  • Little time: you avoid the detours of a group.

For a solo traveller or a couple, a small-group tour often costs much less for similar content: compare with the best guided tours of Rome.

Colosseum, Forum, Palatine

A skip-the-line ticket avoids the ticket queue, not the security check, which everyone goes through. A private tour usually includes entry fees, but read the listing: some sell the guide alone. Reaching the arena or underground requires a specific ticket; see Colosseum arena and underground and Colosseum tickets. There is no cloakroom: bring only a small bag.

Vatican

In the Vatican Museums dress is checked: shoulders and knees covered (Vatican dress code). A private or small group moves more easily through the crowded rooms. To compare early entries and the visit alone, read early access to the Vatican and Vatican Museums or St. Peter's Basilica.

Rome another way: golf cart

The three-hour private golf-cart tour starts from your hotel and covers the main central sights without long walks. See Rome by golf cart.

What to check before paying

  • The word "private": a "private option available" is not necessarily the format displayed.
  • What the price includes: entries, audio guide, guide only.
  • The guide's language and the maximum group size.
  • The meeting point, the ID required and the cancellation policy.
