The essentials in a few lines

  • Ticket: Full Experience underground and arena, €24 full price, valid for two consecutive days, with a single entry to the Colosseum and one entry to the Roman Forum and Palatine.
  • Duration: your stay inside the Colosseum is limited to 90 minutes with this ticket.
  • Booking: online, from 30 days before the date, for a time slot. Access to the underground depends on availability, and places go fast.
  • Who it's for: the curious about history and engineering. If you only want to see the stands, the standard ticket is enough.

What is the hypogeum?

The word refers to the underground structures dug beneath the arena. At the Colosseum they date from the late 1st century, after the amphitheatre opened. The arena floor was made of wood covered with sand ("arena" means "sand" in Latin); below it, a network of brick galleries and chambers served as the backstage.

This is where you understand how the shows were organised. Wild animals and gladiators waited in these corridors; lifts worked by human strength hoisted animals, scenery and machines up to trapdoors in the floor. An animal could thus burst out in the middle of a fight. What you see today are the brick and stone walls of this basement: you get a better sense than anywhere else of the thickness of the foundations and the complexity of the building.

What the visit includes

Inside the Colosseum, arena side

Inside the monument, the Full Experience underground and arena ticket gives access to the stands, as with the standard ticket, to part of the reconstructed arena floor and to the underground. It also includes one entry to the Roman Forum, the Palatine and the other sites attached to the Park, depending on the day's openings.

The arena floor offers a viewpoint you get nowhere else: you see the stands from the fighters' level. On some days part of the arena or the underground may be closed (works, safety): the park notes this on its ticket page.

How long to allow?

With this ticket, your stay in the Colosseum cannot exceed 90 minutes. That is short if you want to see everything: stands, arena, underground, museum. Add the time for the security check at the entrance. Because the ticket stays valid for two days, you can keep the Forum and the Palatine for the next day and avoid rushing.

Who is the visit for?

  • History and architecture lovers: it is the richest visit of the Colosseum.
  • Children: the route works as soon as a child is interested in gladiators; entry is free for under-18s, with a reservation.
  • People who dislike enclosed spaces or have reduced mobility: the underground is narrow and is walked through stairs and tight passages. Ask the park before booking.

If you don't want to go down, the €18 "Only Arena" ticket puts you on the arena floor without the underground (see the comparison).

How to book, step by step

  1. Go to the official ticket office of the Colosseum Archaeological Park (colosseo.it).
  2. Choose "Full Experience underground and arena" (€24), the day and the slot. Sales open 30 days ahead; mornings and weekends go first.
  3. Enter the name of each visitor: the ticket is nominative.
  4. At the entrance, show the ticket and an ID in the same name.
  5. Reductions: €2 for citizens of the European Union aged 18 to 24, free for under-18s, in both cases with a reservation.

Reseller offers also exist, often with a guide: they cost more but include explanations, and help when the official site is sold out. Check that the offer really includes the underground and the arena, and not just a visit of the stands. To spot fake guides and overpriced tickets, see scams to avoid in Rome.

Guided tour or on your own?

With a guide, going down into the underground makes sense: you identify the cages, the lift shafts and the galleries. Without one, an audio guide or some reading beforehand is enough for most visitors. If you are short of time, a guided tour gives the whole story without preparation; compare what the price really includes (ticket included or not, group size, language).

Our advice for organising it

Book the first slot in the morning to avoid the crowds, then keep the rest for the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill with the same ticket, or the next day. To continue, see around the Colosseum: what to see within 10 minutes' walk and Colosseum or Vatican: which to choose?.
