What a typical day contains
All the formulas leave Rome in the morning and return in the evening: about 2.5 hours of road each way. The time actually spent on site is short. Pompeii is a city of 66 hectares and a guided visit covers only part of it; for the rest, read our guide Pompeii from Rome, which also explains the visit without a tour. The coast is usually seen through a free stop at Positano, Amalfi or Sorrento.
City Wonders, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Sorrento
This is the coach tour, the cheapest in the comparison: from €72 (October 2026), 4.6 out of 5 from 11,046 reviews, 12 to 13 hours. The programme includes a guided visit of Pompeii by an archaeologist, time for lunch in the town, the scenic drive along the coast and then Sorrento with free time and a limoncello tasting. Lunch and drinks are not included. Some travelers find the programme rushed and would like more time at Pompeii and Sorrento. See the offer.
City Wonders, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast and Positano
Same organizer, same coach format, with Positano instead of Sorrento: about 2 free hours in Positano after a guided Pompeii visit of about 1.5 hours. The rating is 4.6 out of 5 from about 7,300 reviews, from about $136, with departure from Piazza del Popolo. The time in Positano seems short to several travelers, and a City Wonders listing warns that the coach may go to Sorrento instead on summer weekends because of traffic. The page's historic title mentions a high-speed train, while the description seen speaks of a coach: check the means of transport before booking. See the offer.
Walks of Italy, small group with an archaeologist guide
This is the most careful tour of Pompeii: groups of 18 at most, an archaeologist guide, express entry and, in the early-entry version, access to the Villa of the Mysteries, arriving just as the gates open. It lasts about 13 hours and stops at Sorrento (2 free hours) or, depending on the version, at Positano in high season. Rated 4.7 out of 5 from about 900 reviews. The vehicle may be shared with another group (36 people at most in total), and the tour is not suitable for people with reduced mobility. The price could not be checked: confirm it on the listing. See the offer.
Welcome Italy, minivan with Positano for lunch
An air-conditioned minivan with a tour assistant, about 12 hours, 4.7 out of 5 from 530 reviews. After about 2 hours at Pompeii with a guide and skip-the-line entry, lunch and the visit take place in Positano, then the tour passes through Amalfi. One listing says that in low season, from November to March, most Positano businesses are closed and the tour visits Amalfi instead. The price seen is over $300 (about $335 on one listing, inconsistent with others: check it). See the offer.
Italy on a Budget, by high-speed train
The Rome to Naples leg is by high-speed train, then a minivan follows the coast, with a photo stop at Positano and free time in Amalfi. Pompeii entry is included, with a group of 7 at most, departure from Roma Termini around 8:30 or 9:00 and free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The listing shows 9 to 12 hours depending on the option, and a single review (5 out of 5): too little to judge quality. From $231 to $269 depending on the versions. It avoids the coach, but depends on train times. See the offer.
The other official GetYourGuide bestsellers
Three offers in GetYourGuide's official ranking for Italy are not "Pompeii and coast" day trips from Rome; they complete the comparison.
The entry ticket with a guided tour by an archaeologist (no. 16) covers Pompeii only: from €54.50 (October 2026), 4.8 out of 5 from 24,638 reviews. You must reach Pompeii on your own (see Pompeii from Rome); the meeting point and length should be checked on the listing. See the offer.
The Pompeii and Vesuvius day trip with a pizza lunch (no. 37) leaves from Naples: from €75 (October 2026), 4.8 out of 5 from 9,891 reviews. See the offer.
The Sorrento, Positano and Amalfi premium tour (no. 42) also leaves from Naples: from €90 (October 2026), 4.7 out of 5 from 18,817 reviews, without Pompeii judging by its title. See the offer.
What is not included and the pitfalls
- The day is long. 12 to 13 hours, including about 5 hours on the road: think twice before offering it to young children.
- Time on site. About 2 hours at Pompeii and about as much on the coast; reviews keep mentioning the rushed pace.
- Lunch and drinks. Not included in several listings; budget for a meal.
- The entry ticket. Included for Walks of Italy, Welcome Italy and Italy on a Budget; for City Wonders the listing consulted does not say: check.
- Heat. Pompeii has little shade; bring a hat, water and good shoes. The site closes earlier between 15 October and 15 March (last entry 3:30 pm).
- Accessibility. At least one offer is not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
- Positano or Sorrento. The coast stop changes with the season and the day: read the itinerary for your date.
- Resellers. Avoid the fake skip-the-line tickets sold on the street: see scams to avoid in Rome.
Which day trip to choose?
- Tight budget: City Wonders, Sorrento (€72) or Positano ($136).
- First visit and a wish to understand Pompeii: Walks of Italy, with its archaeologist guide and small group.
- Couple or comfort: Welcome Italy by minivan, accepting a higher price.
- Avoiding the coach: Italy on a Budget by train, with a tiny group.
- Pompeii only with an archaeologist: the ticket with a guided tour from €54.50, the best rated (4.8) of the offers above; the two day trips from Naples only make sense if you are staying in Naples.
- You dislike long days: do Pompeii only, by train, following our guide Pompeii from Rome, or read the other ideas in day trips from Rome.
Booking at the best time
Book a few weeks ahead in high season: several of these listings fill up. In summer the heat at Pompeii weighs; in spring and autumn the day is more pleasant. In low season (November to March), the coast stop may change and Pompeii closes earlier. Keep a free day before the trip: the departure is early. Before buying, compare with which tickets to book in Rome.
