What to do by length
| Layover | Realistic option | To remember |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 h | Stay at the airport | Meal, eSIM, lounge; the centre is too tight |
| 6 to 8 h | Trevi, Pantheon, Piazza Navona on foot | One area only, back 3 h before the flight |
| 8 to 10 h | Colosseum or Vatican from outside + centre | Tickets booked in advance |
| Over 10 h | A full half-day | Private tour with transfer possible |
Getting into town and back
The Leonardo Express is the simplest: 14 EUR and 32 minutes to Termini. The 55 EUR taxi depends on traffic and is only worth it for a group. Leave suitcases at Termini or airport left luggage. An eSIM installed before the flight saves you hunting for wifi: eSIM in Rome.
Sample 8-hour plan
Landing and passport control: allow up to 1 hour. Train: 32 minutes. A walk from the Pantheon to Trevi via Piazza Navona: about 3 hours with lunch. Back at Termini 2.5 hours before the flight, then the train. See also Rome in one day for a longer route.
Tour with transfer from the airport
If you prefer to organise nothing, private tours with a transfer from Fiumicino last about 3 or 5 hours and drop you at your hotel or the airport; the driver is not always a licensed guide: read the listing before booking.
