Monti or Esquilino: how to choose
- Monti: the heart, around Piazza della Madonna dei Monti and Via del Boschetto. Old buildings, small charming hotels, restaurants and bars. The Colosseum is a 5 to 10 minute walk; metro line B (Cavour and Colosseo stations) reaches Termini in one or two stops.
- Esquilino: on either side of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore and the Esquilino market. Larger hotels, gentler prices, easy connections (metro lines A and B, trains, airports). The area is lively and very multicultural; the streets closest to the station are noisier.
Which type of hotel
- Boutique hotels and guesthouses: Monti's main asset. Among the addresses named by specialist guides in October 2026: Nerva Boutique Hotel, near the Forum, Salotto Monti (12 individually decorated rooms) and The Inn at the Roman Forum. Check current prices and recent reviews on Booking.
- Luxury: Palazzo Manfredi, a five-star hotel facing the Colosseum, is the best known; some rooms and the terrace overlook the monument.
- Chain hotels and budget: more numerous on the Esquilino and Termini side. See hotels near Termini station.
Good to know before booking
- Noise: in the evening, Monti stays lively late around Piazza della Madonna dei Monti. Ask for a courtyard room or a high floor.
- Rooms: in old buildings they are small and sometimes have no lift. Read recent reviews.
- Tourist tax: it is added to the price, see the tourist tax in Rome.
- Coming back late: the area is generally safe, but avoid dark streets near the station; see safety at night in Rome.
- Vatican: allow about 30 minutes by metro and on foot to St Peter's Basilica.
