The weather in Rome in July
Normals from the Ciampino station give a high of about 30.3°C, a low of 18.0°C and 19 mm of rain over 2 days: a dry, sunny month (full table in our guide to the best time to visit Rome). These are averages: during heat waves temperatures climb much higher, and the Italian Ministry of Health publishes city-by-city alerts (from green to red, the "bollino rosso"). On red days, lighten your schedule.
Events in July 2026

Organising your days

- 8:30-11:00: open-air sites. The Colosseum, open 8:30 to 19:15 in high season (last entry 18:15), the Roman Forum and the Palatine offer little shade: book the first slot.
- 12:00-16:00: museums and churches. The Borghese Gallery, the Capitoline Museums or the Vatican Museums (booking recommended) offer a break from the heat; see also Rome on a rainy day for indoor ideas.
- Late afternoon: parks (Villa Borghese), a stroll on the Janiculum.
- Evening: late dinner on a terrace, gelato, a show. See Rome at night and the best gelato in Rome.
What is open, what is closed
In July, sites, museums and restaurants are open. A few neighbourhood businesses start closing for the holidays at the end of the month; mass closures come more in August (see Rome in August). 29 June (Saints Peter and Paul), a public holiday in Rome, comes just before July: see the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
Practical tips
- Water: bring a bottle and fill it at the "nasoni" (see drinking water and nasoni in Rome).
- Sun protection: hat, sunscreen, light clothing; shoulders and knees covered to enter churches (a scarf is enough).
- Book ahead: in high season, slots for the most visited sites go fast; see tickets to book in Rome.
- Accommodation: check for air conditioning (see where to stay in Rome).
- Day trips: for a cooler day, the Villa d'Este in Tivoli or the Castelli Romani.
- Crowds and theft: watch your belongings in crowded places, see scams to avoid in Rome. If you feel unwell from the heat, see emergencies and health in Rome.
