What the district offers

  • Position: the Spanish Steps, Via Condotti, the Trevi Fountain and Piazza del Popolo are 5 to 15 minutes on foot.
  • Transport: metro A at Spagna and Flaminio; the Colosseum and the Vatican, however, are farther (metro or taxi).
  • Atmosphere: quiet at night, luxury shops by day, very busy in the daytime around the steps.

Which category to choose

  • Luxury: the top of the steps and the streets off Via del Babuino hold several grand historic hotels (for example the Hassler, right at the top of Trinità dei Monti, or the Hotel de Russie on Via del Babuino). Book for the view, not just the room.
  • Mid-range: a few human-scale properties on the streets parallel to Via Condotti. Rooms are often small: read recent reviews.
  • Budget: few options in the Tridente itself. To save money, stay in Monti or near Termini and reach the Spanish Steps by metro (2 to 4 stops).

Tips

  • The tourist tax is added to the price: see Rome tourist tax.
  • Book 2 to 3 months ahead for high season (April-June, September-October, Christmas).
  • The cobbled streets around the steps are noisy on summer evenings: ask for a courtyard-facing room.
  • To visit the district on foot, read around the Spanish Steps and the Tridente. To compare with other districts, see where to stay in Rome.
