The central districts compared
| District | Best for | Noise | Good to know |

| Campo de' Fiori and Via Giulia | restaurants, nightlife, calm on Via Giulia | noisy on the square | see Campo de' Fiori |
| Trevi, Quirinal and Tridente | shopping, Spanish Steps | very busy by day | see Trevi–Quirinal, Tridente |
| Monti | calm, village feel | medium | on foot to the Colosseum, see Monti |
The three price levels
Prices are higher than near Termini: small hotels and guesthouses on upper floors of apartment buildings, charming 3 and 4 star hotels, palace hotels towards the Spanish Steps. Lifts are rare in old buildings. Rome's tourist tax is extra (EUR 4 to 10 per person per night according to secondary sources, to be checked).
Our pick
First visit: Pantheon–Navona, the most practical base on foot. Calm: Monti or Via Giulia. To compare with other areas see where to stay in Rome and best hotels by budget. If you arrive by car read the centre's rules.
For a group or family, renting an apartment can replace the hotel: see available places on Vrbo.
