Via Margutta is a quiet, cobbled street in the Tridente, 5 minutes from the Spanish Steps, lined with artists' studios, galleries and ivy-covered courtyards. This is where the film "Roman Holiday" (1953) puts the journalist's flat (number 51), and Fellini lived at number 110. The street takes 15 minutes to walk and costs nothing; the appeal is finding calm a step away from the Spanish Steps crowd. Allow 15 to 30 minutes.
Highlights

The street and its studios
Since the 16th century the street has housed artists, then film-makers and galleries. The facades are ochre and doors open onto flowery courtyards: go in only when a gate is open, these are lived-in buildings.

Number 51 and the Fountain of the Artists
Number 51 is the "Roman Holiday" address. The Fountain of the Artists, a small 1927 fountain decorated on a painting theme, is further along the street.
The exhibitions
Twice a year the street hosts an open-air exhibition and sale of painters, the "Cento pittori via Margutta". The dates change: check before you visit.

Tips
- Combine the street with the Spanish Steps and Via Condotti, or with a visit to nearby Piazza del Popolo. Respect the residents: no photos in private courtyards. The street's restaurants are expensive; better to dine in the neighbouring Tridente district, a street or two away.
