Updated on October 5, 2026

The Museum of Civilisations (MUCIV, Museo delle Civiltà) occupies two large palaces in EUR, on Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, in the south of Rome. Created in 2016 by merging several national museums, it includes the Luigi Pigorini Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography, founded in 1876, and the Museum of Folk Arts and Traditions. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 7pm (last entry 6:30pm) and closed on Mondays. The full-price ticket costs €10. Allow two to three hours.

Highlights

The Palace of Sciences

The Palace of Sciences

A Rationalist building of EUR, it houses the prehistory and protohistory collections, palaeontology and mineralogy, as well as the arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania. These collections, built up since the 19th century, are among the most important in Italy.

The Palace of Folk Arts and Traditions

The Palace of Folk Arts and Traditions

Located at number 8 on the square, it presents Italian folk arts and traditions: costumes, musical instruments, objects of rural life and festivals from all regions of Italy. It is an excellent complement for understanding Italy beyond the great monuments.

Prehistory and protohistory

The prehistory section follows the history of the peoples of Italy, from the Stone Age to the beginnings of the Iron Age.

Arts of the world

Masks, sculptures and ritual objects from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Oceania form the other major part of the museum, along with contemporary arts and world cultures.

The early Middle Ages

One section is devoted to objects of the early Middle Ages, from the Alto Medioevo museum's collections brought together in the MUCIV.

The Guattari Cave

The hall devoted to the Guattari Cave, discovered in 1939 on Monte Circeo where a Neanderthal skull was found, is closed for extraordinary maintenance work at the time of writing. Check the official website before you come.

Hours and prices

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 8am to 7pm, last entry 6:30pm; closed on Mondays. Full price €10, reduced €2. Free for EU citizens under 18, for holders of cards that entitle them to it and for everyone on the first Sunday of the month. Palace of Sciences: Piazza Guglielmo Marconi 14; Palace of Folk Arts and Traditions: Piazza Guglielmo Marconi 8.

Practical info

Tips

Combine the museum with a discovery of EUR: the EUR district can be explored on foot in half a day. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free for all, but the museum is busier. The collections are extensive: choose a section (prehistory or arts of the world) rather than trying to see everything. Prices and hours checked in October 2026; some rooms may be closed, so check museocivilta.cultura.gov.it.
