Catacombs of Rome: St Callixtus, St Sebastian and Domitilla, hours and tickets

Updated on October 1, 2026

Three large Christian catacombs can be visited in the south of Rome, along the Via Appia Antica and the via Ardeatina: St Callixtus, St Sebastian and Domitilla. Visits are only possible with a guide from the site, included in the ticket, and each one closes on a different day: Wednesday at St Callixtus, Monday at St Sebastian, Tuesday at Domitilla. A ticket costs €10 at all three sites (reduced €7 for ages 7 to 16), free up to age 6. St Callixtus and Domitilla open from 9am to 12pm and from 2pm to 5pm; St Sebastian from 9:15am to 5:15pm without a break.

Highlights

Domitilla and its underground basilica

Domitilla and its underground basilica

Dug on land belonging to Flavia Domitilla, a member of the family of Emperor Vespasian, the Domitilla catacombs stretch over 17 km of galleries on four levels, with about 150,000 burials. They are the only ones open to the public to keep a semi-underground basilica, built at the end of the 4th century over the tombs of the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus.

The Crypt of the Popes at St Callixtus

The official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century, St Callixtus received about half a million Christians, including sixteen popes and many martyrs. The tour passes through the Crypt of the Popes, the Crypt of St Cecilia and the Cubicles of the Sacraments.

The Baroque basilica, built for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, rises above the galleries. Underground, a covered loggia bears hundreds of graffiti invoking Peter and Paul, left by 3rd-century pilgrims, next to three mausoleums from the 2nd and 3rd centuries.

The Hypogeum of the Flavii

At Domitilla, this private burial gallery predates the Christian catacombs. It lies next to a triclinium where banquets were held in memory of the dead, and a chapel known as the cubiculum of Cupid and Psyche.

The main entrance opens onto the Via Appia Antica, at the start of a cypress-lined lane. Guided tours leave every 30 minutes and last about 40 minutes.
