Updated on October 27, 2026

The Catacombs of Priscilla (Catacombe di Priscilla), at Via Salaria 430, can only be visited on a guided tour of about 45 minutes through galleries dug beneath a villa in northern Rome, with some of the oldest early Christian frescoes. Tiqets sells the guided tour from 15 € (October 2026), rated 4.8/5 from 171 reviews, with guides in English, Italian and Spanish; the site is closed on Mondays. Sources give a full price of 10 € (7 € reduced) at the ticket office, plus an online booking fee.

Highlights

The Cappella Greca and the fresco of the breaking of bread

The Cappella Greca and the fresco of the breaking of bread

In the so-called Greek chapel, a 2nd-4th century fresco shows diners around a table, often read as a eucharistic meal ("fractio panis"). The guide explains how to read these images.

The Madonna and Child

The Madonna and Child

In one gallery, a 3rd-century fresco shows a woman holding a child, beside a man pointing to a star: it is often cited as one of the oldest images of the Virgin. Specialists interpret it in different ways; the guide gives their views.

Galleries and tombs

The tour walks through galleries cut into tuff, with niches (loculi) for tombs, arcosolia and cubicula. The Catacombs of Priscilla are among the oldest in Rome and held Christian burials from the 2nd century. Bring a light jacket: it is cool all year.

Hours and prices

Closed on Mondays and during the annual holidays (January and August according to sources, dates vary); otherwise open in the morning and afternoon, with a midday break (9:00 or 9:30-12:00 or 13:00, then 13:00 or 14:00-17:00 depending on the source). Sources disagree: call +39 06 86206272 or check the official site before going. Full price 10 € (7 € reduced, ages 7-16) at the ticket office, seen on 26 October 2026, plus an online fee. Access is by stairs: poorly suited to visitors with reduced mobility.

Tiqets also sells combined tickets (Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Capuchin Crypt). There is no self-guided visit: every entry is guided. For the history of Christian Rome, see also underground Rome.
