Why an e-bike on the Appian Way
The Via Appia Antica stretches for several kilometres south of Porta San Sebastiano, with long sections of original basalt paving lined with umbrella pines and ruined tombs. The uneven stones are tiring on a city bike; electric assistance and wider tyres make the ride far more comfortable. It also lets you carry on to the Park of the Aqueducts and the Caffarella Park on the same outing. For the city's other routes, see Rome by bike.
A typical route
| Stop | What you see | Visit |
|---|---|---|
| Centro Servizi (Via Appia Antica 58/60) | Start, maps, bike hire | Free |
| Domine Quo Vadis and the catacombs of St Callixtus / St Sebastian | Church and catacombs on the road | Catacombs paid, guided |
| Tomb of Caecilia Metella | Mausoleum and Caetani castle, Appian Way museum | Park ticket |
| Villa of the Quintilii | Large ancient residential complex | Park ticket |
| Circus of Maxentius | Very well-preserved Roman circus, close to Caecilia Metella | Park ticket |
| Park of the Aqueducts | Arches of the Aqua Claudia in the grass | Free |
There is no need to go inside everything: the road itself is free and open, and many cyclists pay only for the Tomb of Caecilia Metella or one catacomb. For ticket details, see the page of each site.
How long to allow
- Short ride (2 to 3 hours): from the Centro Servizi to Caecilia Metella and back, without going inside.
- Half day (4 to 5 hours): the road as far as the Villa of the Quintilii, one catacomb or tomb, and a lunch stop in a trattoria along the road.
- Full day: the road, one paid visit, then the Park of the Aqueducts and the Caffarella.
A catacomb can only be visited with a guide, at set times (see catacombs of Rome); allow one to two hours on site at the Villa of the Quintilii.
Rent an e-bike or take a guided ride
| Rental on site | Guided ride | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | E-bike €8 an hour or €32 a day, helmet, lock and map included (Centro Servizi, October 2026) | Reference points found with resellers: about $80 to $90 for 3 h 30, about $100 for 4 h, about $125 for 6 h, depending on the operator |
| Duration | Up to you | 3 h 30 to 6 h |
| Entrance fees | Extra | Depending on the offer, a catacomb entry is sometimes included |
| Guide | No | Yes, with commentary on the road, the tombs and the aqueducts |
| Best for | Confident cyclists, small budgets, Sundays | A first visit, a ride with nothing to organise |
Rental is the cheapest and most flexible option. A guided ride saves you finding your way, choosing stops and arranging a catacomb visit, which is only possible with a guide.
Book a ride
Several e-bike rides are offered on GetYourGuide; the programmes vary (check each offer's page before booking):
- Appian Way, catacombs and aqueducts by e-bike: the most complete route, with catacombs and aqueducts.
- Underground Appian Way and catacombs by e-bike: focus on the catacombs.
- Appian Way and Aqueducts Park by e-bike: more countryside and arches.
Check the offer page for the price, duration, guide's language and what is included; these change with the season.
The right day: Sunday
On Sundays and public holidays, cars are banned from the road beyond the Tomb of Caecilia Metella: it is the quietest and safest day to ride. Book a guided ride or a bike early in high season. On weekdays, cars and buses use the narrow road: stay on the paved verges and be alert.
Closures to remember: the Tomb of Caecilia Metella and the Villa of the Quintilii are closed on Mondays; the catacombs close one day a week (St Callixtus on Wednesday, St Sebastian on Monday, Domitilla on Tuesday). On a Monday you will therefore see the road and, depending on which catacombs are open, a guided visit, but neither Caecilia Metella nor the Quintilii.
Getting there
- From the centre: bus 118 (Appia Antica/Domine Quo Vadis stop for the Centro Servizi, S. Sebastiano stop for Caecilia Metella).
- The Regional Park's Centro Servizi is at Via Appia Antica 58/60; the meeting point of some guided rides is at no. 136, to be checked on your confirmation.
- To the Park of the Aqueducts: metro line A, Giulio Agricola or Subaugusta stations.
Practical tips
- Arrive early and be back before sunset: the road is poorly lit.
- Bring water and food; there are few places to stop between the sites.
- Ride slowly on the cobbles and give way to pedestrians.
- Check the weather: the stones are slippery in the rain. See also the best time to visit Rome.
