What these tours tell

  • Beatrice Cenci: a 22-year-old noblewoman, convicted of arranging the murder of her abusive father and beheaded on 11 September 1599 in the square before the castle; legend says her ghost reappears on the bridge on the anniversary.
  • Mastro Titta: Rome's executioner, whose shadow is said to haunt the route between his house and the scaffold.
  • Giulia Tofana: the poisoner whose story is told on some tours.

These are legends, told as such by the guides, not verified facts.

The Capuchin Crypt is not a ghost

The crypt, decorated with the bones of some 4,000 monks according to one source read, is a museum to visit by day, not a stop on most night walks: open daily 9:30am to 1:30pm and 2:30pm to 6:30pm according to the official site (read Capuchin Crypt tickets). To see the crypt and catacombs in one outing, with transfers, here is the Capuchin Crypt and catacombs tour.

Practical tips

In the evening the Tiber is cold: bring a light layer. Tours vary in price and language: compare the length and whether castle admission is included (some formulas leave it out). For other evenings, see Rome at night, night safety in Rome and Halloween in Rome.
