What the district offers
- Position: Campo de' Fiori and Piazza Navona are 15 minutes on foot, St Peter's Square 25 minutes. The Colosseum is farther (tram 8 and bus).
- Transport: tram 8 links Trastevere to Largo Argentina; Trastevere station has a direct train to Fiumicino airport; no metro.
- Atmosphere: very lively in the evening around Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, calmer on the slopes of the Janiculum.
Which category to choose
- Charming hotels: a few properties in former convents and houses around the square, for example the Hotel Santa Maria, built around a cloister. Book early in high season.
- Hotels on the heights: some hotels, like the Donna Camilla Savelli (in a Borromini convent on the Janiculum slope), offer calm with a view; in return, the walk up is steep.
- Apartments and guesthouses: very common in Trastevere, with the best value for stays of several nights; check for a lift and air conditioning.
Tips
- Street- or square-facing rooms are noisy until 2 a.m. in summer: ask for a courtyard-facing room.
- The tourist tax is added to the price: see Rome tourist tax.
- To choose between Trastevere and Monti, read Trastevere or Monti, where to stay. For the district itself, see Trastevere and where to eat in Trastevere.
