The taxi: a rate set by the city

Rome's official fixed fares include the link between the two airports at €55 per car, luggage included (see Rome airports). Take a white taxi from the official rank, say "tariffa fissa" and check the amount before leaving. The road passes through the outskirts of Rome and the ring road, so a jam adds minutes but not euros.

Train and bus via Termini

There is no rail link between the airports. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop from Fiumicino to Termini in 32 minutes for €14 (details). From Termini a regional train goes to Ciampino station, where the Ciampino Airlink bus takes you to the airport in about 10 minutes. See Ciampino airport for the stop and the ticket. Each change adds waiting time and stairs; it is a daytime option for travellers with one bag.

Which margin between two flights

  • Separate tickets: at least 5 hours between landing at FCO and take-off from CIA (1 hour at the airport, up to 1 hr 15 on the road, then check-in and security at CIA).
  • One booking: the airline must help if the first flight is late; ask whether the airport change is included.
  • Strike days: Italian transport strikes can stop trains and buses for hours. Check the calendar in Italy air strikes before choosing the rail route.
  • Night connection: if you land late and fly early, a hotel near the airport beats a night transfer: see hotels near Fiumicino.
