Rental or hotel: who should pick which
Choose an apartment for the kitchen, laundry, separate bedrooms and a stay of at least three or four nights; choose a hotel for breakfast, a 24-hour front desk and no arrival formalities. Compare the two in hotel or aparthotel in Rome, the choice of area in Trastevere or Monti and central hotels in hotels in the historic centre.
Check before you book
- Compliance: the national CIN code must appear on the listing (mandatory since 2025 according to the Italian press); beyond 30 nights it is no longer a tourist rental. Rome's tourist tax is paid on top, sometimes on the spot.
- Total: nightly rate, cleaning, tourist tax and deposit. Compare the total for the same dates, not the headline price.
- Cancellation: free or non-refundable, and the deadline.
- Keys and arrival: who hands over the keys, at what time, and a contact reachable on the day.
- Recent reviews: read the last twelve months and look at guests' photos.

Is an apartment cheaper than a hotel in Rome?
Not always for two; from three or four people, sharing bedrooms and the kitchen often lowers the cost per person.
Is the displayed price the final price?
Not always: add cleaning, taxes and the deposit, and only compare totals for the same dates.
