Trionfale Market: the big covered market near the Vatican

Updated on October 5, 2026

The Trionfale market (Mercato Trionfale) fills a large glass-and-concrete building in the Prati district, on Via Andrea Doria, a few minutes' walk from the Vatican Museums. With about 270 stalls under one roof, it is one of the biggest covered markets in Rome, used far more by local residents than by tourists. You will find fruit and vegetables, butchers, fishmongers, cheeses, cured meats, as well as household linen and textiles. Entry is free; allow an hour to walk around and taste two or three things.

Highlights

Via Andrea Doria

Via Andrea Doria

The market sits on this wide street in Prati, which is also served by buses to the Vatican. The current building, opened in 2009, replaced the old market hall and has a large underground car park.

The fruit, vegetable and herb stalls

The aisles are organised by colour: green for fruit and vegetables, blue for fish, red for meat. Producers sell the seasonal products of Lazio: Roman artichokes in spring, puntarelle in winter, tomatoes in summer.

The cured meat and cheese counters

Pecorino romano, sheep's milk ricotta, hams, guanciale and salami: a good place to put together a picnic or to take vacuum-packed specialities home, and to compare with the pricier shops in the centre.

A neighbourhood market

Romans from Prati do their weekly shopping here: watch the regulars chatting with their butcher or greengrocer, an everyday scene you will not see in the lanes of the historic centre.

Practical info

Tips

Come before 1pm: after lunch many stalls start packing up, especially on days when the market closes at 2pm. Prices are not always displayed, so ask before ordering and check the weighing. For a sandwich or a dish to eat on the spot, look at the small street-food counters near the entrance rather than the tourist restaurants on the next street. Keep your bag and phone in front of you in the narrow aisles.

How to get there

Via Andrea Doria 41, 00192 Rome (Prati district). Metro line A, Cipro or Ottaviano stations, then a few minutes on foot. It is about three minutes' walk from the Vatican Museums entrance.

Opening hours

Best: Weekday mornings
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday 07:00-14:00
