Campagna Amica Market at the Circus Maximus: the farmers' market
The Campagna Amica market at the Circus Maximus (Mercato di Campagna Amica al Circo Massimo) is a covered farmers' market on Via San Teodoro, at the foot of the Palatine Hill and a short walk from the Circus Maximus. About sixty farms from Lazio and neighbouring regions sell their fruit and vegetables, cheeses, oils, breads, honeys, meats and cured meats directly. It is a weekend market, very handy for lunch or for stocking up after the Roman Forum and the Palatine. Entry is free; allow an hour, longer if you eat lunch there.
Highlights

Seasonal fruit and vegetables
The crates of oranges, greens, tomatoes or fennel change with the seasons. The producers are on site, so you can ask questions and taste before buying.

The aisles under the hall
The market is sheltered in a covered structure, so it works in the rain. Flowers, plants, bread, cheeses and preserves fill the aisles.
The "cuochi contadini"
On Saturdays and Sundays, farmer-cooks serve traditional dishes made with the market's produce. It is a simple, inexpensive lunch to eat on the spot.
Products to bring home
Olive oil, honey, artisan pasta, pecorino and vegetable preserves travel easily; ask for vacuum packing for cheeses if you are flying.

Tips
Arrive before noon for the best choice, especially bread and ready-made dishes. The market combines well with the Circus Maximus, the Mouth of Truth and the Aventine Hill, all a few minutes' walk away. Fresh produce is sold by weight: ask for it to be weighed in front of you. Bring a foldable shopping bag.
