The Doria Pamphilj Gallery occupies the palace of the same name, at Via del Corso 305, a short walk from Piazza Venezia: a private collection, still owned by the Doria Pamphilj family who live in the palace, where you can see Velázquez's Portrait of Innocent X, two canvases by Caravaggio, a double portrait by Raphael and works by Titian, Bruegel the Elder and Claude Lorrain. It is open every day except Wednesday; a ticket costs €16 on site, €17 online, audio guide included. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes. The paintings hang from floor to ceiling, following the late 18th-century arrangement recorded in a 1767 inventory kept in the family archive.
Highlights

The Hall of Mirrors
The second wing of the gallery lines up Venetian mirrors from the early 18th century, ancient sculptures and a large porphyry vase; the vault, painted by Aureliano Milani between 1731 and 1734, tells the labours of Hercules. The four wings surround a Renaissance arcaded courtyard.

Caravaggio
The gallery holds two early canvases by the painter: the Rest on the Flight into Egypt, in which an angel plays the violin in front of Joseph, who holds the score for him, and the Penitent Magdalene, seated with her head bowed, her jewels abandoned at her feet.

The palace
Built over an early 16th-century residence and enlarged over five centuries by the Della Rovere, Aldobrandini, Pamphilj and Doria families, the palace received its façade on the Corso between 1731 and 1734, the work of the architect Gabriele Valvassori. The private apartments on the piano nobile, six drawing rooms furnished to the taste of successive princes, are visited with a separate ticket.
The Velázquez cabinet
The Portrait of Innocent X, painted by Diego Velázquez in 1650, hangs in a small room of its own, facing Bernini's marble bust of the same pope. According to tradition, the pope found the portrait "troppo vero", too true.
