Caserta Royal Palace from Rome: tickets, train and visit in 2026
The Reggia di Caserta, the "Italian Versailles", is an 18th-century royal palace of 1,200 rooms and a UNESCO site, about 1 h 15 to 2 h from Rome by train depending on the service. Allow a full day: 1 h 30 for the royal apartments, 2 to 3 h for the park and gardens, plus travel. In 2026 the park + royal apartments ticket is listed at 18 € full price (apartments only: 12 €), closed on Tuesday. Caserta station is right opposite the palace. Plan 5 to 6 hours on site, travel not included.
Highlights

The facade and grand staircase
The palace was begun in 1752 by Luigi Vanvitelli for Charles of Bourbon, King of Naples. The visit goes up the monumental staircase into the royal apartments, including the throne room and the palatine chapel.

The park and the Great Waterfall
The park, over 3 km long, climbs to a 78-metre waterfall through a series of pools and fountains. You can cover it on foot (about 2 h round trip to the top of the waterfall), by bike or by small shuttle.

The English Garden
Laid out in the late 18th century, this is the most romantic part, with artificial ruins, greenhouses and ponds. The palace has been used as a film set several times, including for a Star Wars episode.
Which ticket to choose
The "park + royal apartments" ticket is the most complete. The "park only" ticket is sold on site, late in the day only. A guided tour from Rome (high-speed train, entry and guide) saves you the paperwork and queues, but leaves only 2 to 3 h on site.
Practical info
Tips
- Take a train from Roma Termini or Tiburtina before 9:00 to keep the whole afternoon for the park. The palace is free on the first Sunday of the month but busier: the royal apartments and park stay open, some other rooms do not. Prices and hours noted in October 2026 from the official sheet of a current exhibition (8:30-19:00, last entry 18:00, closed Tuesday): another official page says 8:00-18:00, so check before you go.
How to get there
Viale Douhet, 81100 Caserta. From Rome a direct Frecciarossa or Italo (depending on the timetable) takes about 1 h 15; a regional train about 2 h and costs less. Caserta station is right opposite the palace entrance. From Naples, Napoli Centrale is about 40 minutes away. To combine with the region, see our guides to Naples from Rome and Pompeii from Rome.
