What to do, in order

Start with the official site

The only official online sale is the Vatican Museums ticket office (tickets.museivaticani.va). The standard ticket was €25 online in October 2026, including a €5 booking fee; the museums are closed on Sundays except the last Sunday of the month, which is free but extremely crowded. Tickets are linked to the buyer's name, so bring the ID used to book. Check the page several times: a sold-out date can show slots again when others cancel.

A guided tour is a separate stock

Guided tours with entry are sold by tour operators, not from the museums' standard allocation, so they can be available when the self-guided ticket is not. Check that the tour includes the Sistine Chapel and entry (not just a guide at the door), the group size, the language and the meeting point. Our comparison of early-entry Vatican tours shows five tours with their prices and what "early" really means. Expect to pay more than the official ticket: you are paying for a guide and a place.

Friday evening

On selected Fridays from April to October the museums open in the evening. Read Vatican Museums at night for hours, ticket and tours. Outside that season, this option is closed.

St Peter's is not the museums

The Basilica is a separate church with free entry and a security queue; it does not include the Sistine Chapel. If you have no museums ticket, see the basilica and the square, and read Vatican Museums or St Peter's to plan the rest of the day. For the neighbourhood, around the Vatican lists what to see.

What not to do

  • Do not buy a ticket from someone in the street or a site that does not name the museums or the tour operator.
  • Do not rely on an "entry guaranteed" claim without a date, time and meeting point.
  • Do not cancel a hotel because of a sold-out day; a different day is usually available.

FAQ

Are the Vatican Museums really sold out? The official site can show a date as sold out, and slots can come back when others cancel.

Does a guided tour have its own tickets? Yes. Tour operators sell entries with a guide, so they can be available when the standard ticket is not.

Can I just visit the Sistine Chapel? No, the Sistine Chapel is at the end of the museum route and needs the museums ticket.

Is St Peter's Basilica a substitute? No, it is free and separate, and it does not include the Sistine Chapel.
