The Cascate del Mulino near Saturnia, in southern Tuscany, are natural pools of sulphurous water at about 37 °C all year round, freely accessible and free of charge (2026 sources). From Rome, allow about 2 to 2.5 hours each way by road: you go on a day trip of 7 to 9 hours, with lunch, or by rental car. The 7-hour "Rome to Saturnia" tour is rated 4.5 out of 5, but from only about 35 reviews (GetYourGuide, October 2026). ## Tour or car? | Option | Length | What is included | Best for | |---|---|---|---| | Day trip by bus | 7 hours | Transport, breakfast, free time at the springs | Those who do not want to drive | | Tour with lunch | 9 hours | Transport, thermal bath, Italian lunch | A full day | | Rental car | Free | Nothing (see below) | Those who want to arrive early or stay late | Our pick: the 7-hour tour, the most booked. Prices vary a lot by option: check them on the activity page. To rent a car, see car rental at Fiumicino; for other ideas in Tuscany, see Tuscany road trip from Rome. ## Free waterfalls or paid spa? The Cascate del Mulino are freely accessible, with no fixed hours or ticket office. The neighbouring Terme di Saturnia resort is a paid spa, with pools, sauna and treatments: we did not find an up-to-date day-entry price, so ask the spa. According to a May 2026 guide, parking about 200 metres away costs about €2.50 an hour. ## What to bring Swimsuit, towel, flip-flops (the bottom is slippery) and spare clothes: changing facilities on site are limited. The water smells of sulphur, which is normal. In winter the water stays warm, but the air can be cold when you get out: bring a bathrobe and a jacket. ## When to go The water is at about 37 °C all year, so the trip also works in winter, when Rome is quieter: see Rome in winter. The site is very popular: aim for a weekday morning. For other day trips, see day trips from Rome.
