Update 30 October 2026

  • Today, Friday 30 October (press of 27 October): the USB general strike is in force. The rail stoppage (Trenitalia, Frecciarossa, Italo, Trenord) runs until 8:59 pm tonight; trains that left by 9 pm on Thursday had to arrive by 10 pm, and today only the official list of guaranteed mid- and long-distance trains runs. Cancelled airport rail links such as the Malpensa Express in Milan are replaced by direct buses.
  • Rome: ATAC metro and buses and the Cotral extra-urban buses are covered for 24 hours, with guaranteed service until 8:29 am and from 5 pm to 7:59 pm. Rally at 10:30 am in piazza dei Cinquecento, in front of Termini; demonstrations are planned in 41 cities, mostly in the morning, and times may still change (QuiFinanza, updated 27 October). Milan's ATM staff are not joining.
  • Not confirmed: no airport cancellation was found; if flights are affected, ENAC guarantees departures from 7 am to 10 am and from 6 pm to 9 pm. The exclusion of transport reported on 14 October is not repeated by any source we read after 26 October.

What we know on 27 October 2026

ATAC guaranteed time bands on 30 October

According to Roma Servizi per la Mobilità (published 23 October, updated 25 October):

  • Guaranteed: across the network, from the start of service until 8:29 am, then from 5 pm to 7:59 pm.
  • Not guaranteed: from 8:30 am to 5 pm, then from 8 pm to the end of daytime service. "N" night lines are not guaranteed on the night of 29 to 30; they are on the night of 30 to 31.
  • Metro: lines A, B/B1 and C not guaranteed after midnight.
  • Stations: escalators and lifts not guaranteed in open stations; ticket offices not guaranteed. Online tickets and card payment on board remain possible.
  • Other operators: the Troiani, Tuscia and Atr lines are also affected.

In previous strikes, ATAC measured 42.9% participation on the surface network on 18 May 2026 and 12.2% on the metro and regional rail: the metro is often less affected than buses, but a station-by-station closure without notice remains possible.

The contradiction to know about

The Guarantee Commission stated on 13 October that the USB strike conflicted with the protected All Saints' bridge period, 30 October to 5 November, during which local transport and rail strikes are banned, and asked USB to exclude them. The Metropolitana di Roma site wrote on 14 October that USB had amended its proclamation to exclude them. But on 15 October USB published "USB confirms the general strike in all sectors, transport included" (trasporti.usb.it), and the ATAC notice and the Roma Servizi per la Mobilità notice (23 October, no revocation on 27 October) describe the strike as active. We could not read the ministry calendar (scioperi.mit.gov.it) from our tools, and no requisition order was found. Our reading on 27 October: ATAC and trains are covered. Check the ministry calendar on 29 October, along with the ATAC and Roma Servizi per la Mobilità notices.

How to check, step by step

  1. On 29 October: open scioperi.mit.gov.it and filter by date 30 October, "local" sector and Lazio region.
  2. On the evening of 29 October: check atac.roma.it and romamobilita.it for the lines actually closed.
  3. For trains: open the guaranteed-train list on Trenitalia and Italo; it is published several days ahead.
  4. On the morning of the 30th: check the Rome questura for student marches.

What if a strike day goes wrong? In packed transport or on long walks, a fall or a bout of illness is still possible. Outside the European Union, an emergency visit or a night in hospital in Rome is charged in full. A health and repatriation insurance (SafetyWing, bought online, for the length of the trip) covers care and the trip home. It does not cover trip cancellation. See our travel insurance guide.

Getting to the airport or station

For a flight or train on the 30th, fit the journey into the guaranteed morning band (before 8:29 am) or late-afternoon band (5 pm to 7:59 pm). If you land at Fiumicino, the Leonardo Express links the airport to Termini; if a train is cancelled, a fixed-fare taxi is still possible. See Rome's airports and taxis in Rome.

What to do in Rome that day

Walk the historic centre, which is best seen on foot: the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps follow one another within two kilometres. A museum with a booked slot, such as the Vatican Museums, removes the dependence on buses. Avoid bus trips between 8:30 am and 5 pm. Our guide to walking tours in Rome offers routes.

Flight cancelled or delayed by a strike: are you owed compensation?

  • Who is covered: EU Regulation 261/2004 (EU261) applies to flights leaving the EU (any airline) and flights into the EU on an EU airline.
  • Amounts: €250 up to 1,500 km, €400 from 1,500 to 3,500 km (or intra-EU flights over 1,500 km), €600 beyond 3,500 km, if the flight is cancelled less than 14 days before departure or arrives 3 hours or more late. The amount can be cut by 50% if you are rerouted at times close to the original.
  • Strike: the case on this page — Here, the strikes are by third parties. An air traffic control strike, an airport staff strike or a general strike is usually an extraordinary circumstance: no compensation, but the airline must still offer a refund or rebooking and care (meals, hotel).
  • Claim for free: directly with the airline, using the form on its website; keep your boarding pass and all proofs. Deadline depends on the country — Italy: 2 years.
  • Claims service: AirHelp checks your flight for free and handles the claim, taking a commission only if it wins (about 35% of the compensation, VAT included, plus 15% if legal action is needed). You can also claim yourself at no cost.

What to do safely during the general strike

Here is a plan B to keep your trip going without taking risks.

  • Areas to avoid on protest days: piazza della Repubblica, piazza San Giovanni, piazza del Popolo, piazza Venezia, Termini.
  • Outing away from the marches: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, day trip, far from the squares where people march.
  • Airport transfer: transfer from Rome Fiumicino airport, no train, metro or bus to catch.
  • For the airport leg, Welcome Pickups offers a private driver booked in advance, so you do not depend on trains, the metro or buses.
  • Calm hotel, free cancellation: hotels in Trastevere, quiet area, refundable if your plans change.

FAQ

Will the Rome metro run on 30 October?

According to ATAC and Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, it is guaranteed until 8:29 am and from 5 pm to 7:59 pm, with possible disruption in between; after midnight on the night of 30 to 31, lines A, B/B1 and C are not guaranteed. One site reported an exclusion on 14 October, but USB confirmed transport on 15 October; check again on 29 October.

Will my train on 30 October be cancelled?

Probably, in part: the stoppage from 9 pm on the 29th to 8:59 pm on the 30th is in Trenitalia's notice (relayed by Vivereroma, 26 October), regional trains keep their weekday guaranteed bands (6 to 9 am, 6 to 9 pm) and the long-distance guaranteed list is on Trenitalia's site. Only a decision of the Commission or the ministry could cancel the stoppage; none was reported on 27 October.

What if my booking is affected?

Keep your receipts. A carrier must offer a refund or rerouting; fixed compensation is rarely due for a strike.
