Update 30 October 2026
- Today, Friday 30 October: USB general strike with a rally at 10:30 am in piazza dei Cinquecento, in front of Termini; demonstrations in 41 cities, mostly in the morning, and student mobilisations; times may still change (QuiFinanza, updated 27 October). The route of student marches is not published: expect crowds and closed gates around Termini in the morning. ATAC is guaranteed until 8:29 am and from 5 pm to 7:59 pm.
- Next: Friday 20 November, CGIL general strike on the same day as the European student strike; no Rome march route is announced yet. Press also lists a general strike on 3 and 4 December: not yet confirmed.
Situation today, 27 October 2026
- Saturday 24 October: an authorised march left Piazza della Repubblica around 2 pm along Via Cavour (Virgilio, 24 October, 10:34 pm). About a thousand young people broke away towards the Circo Massimo, then tried to reach the Colosseum by Via degli Annibaldi; police stopped them at the Arch of Constantine. The gates of Termini station were closed, including the Via Giolitti entrance. In the evening, clashes took place between Largo di Santa Susanna and Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, near the Viminale: water cannon, tear gas, charges.
- Figures: about 7,000 marchers according to Il Fatto Quotidiano (25 October), 1,500 police deployed, more than 200 people identified, 96 taken to the police station and one arrest (Virgilio, Il Fatto Quotidiano). Before the march, 20 young people had been taken to the police headquarters after preventive checks (ANSA, 24 October).
- Reasons: against war and rearmament, against the cost of living and against the security decree adopted on 20 October, according to Virgilio. The movement behind the unauthorised march grew out of the Milan riots of 17-18 October.
- Metro: the articles we read mention no station closure on 24 October; only the Termini gates are cited. On march days the police often close stations near the route; check atac.roma.it.
- Rome in recent days: on Saturday 17 October, the CGIL gathered about 100,000 people (organisers' figure) in Piazza del Popolo for the "La Via Maestra" demonstration, where its general secretary Maurizio Landini announced the 20 November general strike.
- Friday 30 October: USB announces a rally in Rome at 10:30 am in piazza dei Cinquecento, in front of Termini station (Il Fatto Quotidiano, 27 October); the route of student marches is not published.

No ATAC-specific strike was found for November to January as of 25 October 2026. Where they march in Rome
- Piazza della Repubblica: the usual starting point for union and political marches, in front of Repubblica metro station (line A) and ten minutes on foot from Termini.
- Via Cavour, Esquiline, Santa Maria Maggiore: the most frequent route towards the Imperial Forums or Piazza San Giovanni. On 24 October the march also used Via Labicana and Via Merulana.
- Piazza di Porta San Giovanni: the classic end point of large union demonstrations (metro A and C).
- Piazza del Popolo: the CGIL held its 17 October rally there.
- Colosseum, Imperial Forums, Circo Massimo: areas that groups leaving the authorised march sometimes try to reach; the Colosseum was targeted on 24 October.
- Government districts: the Viminale and Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, where the 24 October clashes took place.
The official route is set by the Rome police (questura) and published the day before or that morning (the questura's "Manifestazioni previste" page, and Roma Servizi per la Mobilità notices on romamobilita.it).
Metro, buses and trains
- Metro: along a march route, the police close stations (Repubblica, Termini, Cavour, Colosseo and San Giovanni are the usual candidates). On 24 October no closure was reported in the sources we read.
- Buses: lines are diverted around the route; Roma Servizi per la Mobilità publishes the diversions the same day.
- Trains: Termini is the interchange hub; its gates were closed on the evening of the 24th. On strike days, check Trenitalia and Italo.
- Airports: Fiumicino is linked by the Leonardo Express train from Termini; if it is blocked, plan a fixed-fare taxi. See Rome's airports.

Tourist sites and museums: what may close
- The Colosseum and the Roman Forum are close to the routes: access along Via dei Fori Imperiali is sometimes blocked, and visits are cancelled if staff strike.
- The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is on Via Merulana, where the march passed on 24 October.
- The Vatican Museums and St Peter's Basilica are off the usual routes, but access by metro line A depends on ATAC service.
- State museums may partly close on a general strike day; check the museum's official site in the morning.
What to do instead
On sensitive days, move from the Esquiline and Termini to Trastevere, the Vatican, the Villa Borghese or the Appian Way. A museum with a booked time slot (Vatican Museums, Borghese Gallery) avoids queues and routes; choose a free-cancellation booking. For walks that avoid the metro, read Walking tours in Rome. A taxi is still possible but demand surges.
What if you were injured in a crowd surge? It is unlikely if you keep your distance from marches, but it is not impossible. Outside the European Union, an emergency visit or a night in hospital in Rome is charged in full. A health and repatriation insurance (SafetyWing, bought online, for the length of the trip) covers care and the trip home. It does not cover trip cancellation. See our travel insurance guide.
Practical tips
- Do not follow a march to film it; leave the street as soon as shouting, smoke flares or police lines appear.
- Keep your phone charged and your papers on you; crowd scams exist, see scams to avoid in Rome.
- Book accommodation with free cancellation near Termini if you arrive on a strike day.
What to do safely during the protest
Here is a plan B to keep your trip going without taking risks.
- Areas to avoid on protest days: piazza della Repubblica, piazza San Giovanni, piazza del Popolo, piazza Venezia, Termini.
- Outing away from the marches: Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast, day trip, far from the squares where people march.
- Calm hotel, free cancellation: hotels in Trastevere, quiet area, refundable if your plans change.
FAQ
Is there a protest in Rome today?
As of 27 October 2026, no march was announced for today in our sources; the last one took place on Saturday 24 October. Check the Rome police (questura) in the morning.
Does the 30 October strike affect Rome?
ATAC and Roma Servizi per la Mobilità report a 24-hour strike on the whole network (5 am to 11:59 pm) with guaranteed service until 8:29 am and from 5 pm to 7:59 pm, and Trenitalia a rail stoppage from 9 pm on 29 October to 8:59 pm on 30 October. A Rome metro news site (14 October) said local transport and trains were excluded because of the protected All Saints' bridge period (30 October to 5 November), but USB confirmed transport on 15 October and no revocation was reported on 27 October. Should I cancel my trip to Rome?
No: the disruption lasts a few hours and does not hit the whole city. Keep changeable tickets for train and flight journeys on fixed dates.
