The options at a glance

What the ticket includes

Two cells cut into the tuff, beneath the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami, at the foot of the Capitoline Hill. Tradition places Saint Peter and Saint Paul here, with no historical proof. The €10 ticket includes the audio guide and guaranteed access by reservation. The stairs are narrow: the prison is not accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. Entry is included in the Roma Pass (see the Roma Pass and Omnia Card). Details on our Mamertine Prison page.

Tiqets or GetYourGuide?

Both sell the same idea: an entry ticket with an audio guide. Tiqets states it is non-refundable and cannot be changed, with hours from 9am to 5pm; the visit is not booked for a precise time, which reduces the point of a timed ticket. The only real benefit is skipping the queue and bundling the purchase with the Forum: Tiqets offers a prison, Roman Forum and Palatine combo from about €29. If you already have a ticket for the Roman Forum, simply add the prison ticket, which is not included in it.

When a guided tour is worth it

The prison is small and dark; the audio guide is enough. A guide is only worth it as part of a wider Forum tour, where the Carcere is one stop among others. Avoid paying a lot for 40 minutes in two rooms.

Planning the visit

Go at opening or at the end of the day: the room is small and better without groups. The visit is indoors, so useful in rain or strong heat. Next door: the Forum and Trajan's Column.
