What the US advisory means

Several European countries share this level: it asks you to stay alert, not to avoid the city.

Where thefts happen in Rome

  • Termini station and metro line A: Barberini, Spagna and Termini stations at rush hour.
  • Bus 64 to the Vatican: known for pickpockets; keep your bag in front of you.
  • Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps: fake "gladiators" asking money for a photo, "free" bracelets, petitions.
  • Taxis: use an official white taxi, never a driver who approaches you; see taxis in Rome.

More in scams to avoid in Rome and safety at night.

Health and insurance

US health plans, Medicare included, generally do not cover care abroad. Travel insurance for medical care and evacuation is worth having; see travel insurance for Italy. SafetyWing covers health and evacuation, not trip cancellation. Also enroll in the State Department's STEP programme.

A calm first evening

A small-group moonlight walking tour of central Rome shows you the lit-up monuments with a guide.

FAQ
