Castelli Romani: the classic option

The "Roman castles" are a dozen villages in the Alban Hills, including Frascati, known for its white wine. Frascati is a protected designation of origin: Frascati DOC, Frascati Superiore DOCG, and Cannellino di Frascati DOCG, a sweet white. A half-day usually follows the same pattern: a cellar visit, a few wines, cured meats and cheeses, sometimes a lunch. For the village itself and its villas, see Frascati. Two offers cover this format: the 4-hour tour and the tasting with a private chauffeur, which costs more but avoids group schedules.

Tasting in town: Testaccio or Trastevere

No car and no half-day free? The market tasting in Testaccio combines wines and local products and is done on foot. A tasting with food pairings in Trastevere also exists on GetYourGuide; open the Rome: Trastevere Wine Tasting with Food Pairing and Gelato to find it and read its conditions. For the neighbourhoods: Testaccio and Trastevere. If you mainly want to eat, compare with the Testaccio and Trastevere food tour.

A day in Tuscany

Montepulciano is more than two hours' drive from Rome: the day is long. Book it for the reds (Vino Nobile) and the landscape. Less time? See Siena and San Gimignano from Rome, Orvieto and our day trips from Rome.
